History of the Wajarri Yamaji Language Group
In the Mid-West, Murchison, and Gascoyne regions, there were traditionally 12-15 distinct language groups. Over time, Aboriginal cultures and languages have suffered significantly. Wajarri country is inland from Geraldton and extends to Mullewa, Gascoyne Junction and Meekatharra. The lanaguage is the most widely spoken in the area., however, it is now critically endangered, with fewer than 30 fluent speakers remaining. Due to the extensive geographical spread of Wajarri country, the language encompasses many dialects and varieties.
